Treating Depression

In Australia, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men will suffer from some form of depression or anxiety in their lifetime. Currently the main methods of treatment are medications and/or counselling.

There is however a low cost treatment with no side effects called exercise.

A recent article in the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine published an extensive and well designed study to compare the effectiveness of a supervised aerobic exercise class, a home-based aerobic exercise program, sertraline (Zoloft) medication, and a placebo-pill for the treatment of depression.  The intent of this study was to compare the effectiveness of exercise vs. medication for the treatment of depression over the course of a 4 month treatment program.

This study found that after 4 months depression was in remission for:

  • 47% of patients treated with medication
  • 45% of patients in the supervised exercise class
  • 40% of patients in the home exercise program
  • 31% of patients taking placebo-pill

The statistical analysis calculated that there was no significant difference in effectiveness between the medication and any of the exercise groups.

Therefore, exercise was shown to be equally effective as medication for the treatment of depression.

In February 2011, this same journal published a follow-up to their original study that looked at how these patients were doing 1 year after the study ended.

They found, at 1 year later, that the patients who had been originally assigned to the exercise groups had less depressive symptoms and most continued to exercise between 0-180 minutes per week.
