Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment for tendonitis, muscular, ligament and other soft tissue injuries.

It involves the application of high-energy acoustic (mechanical) pulses transmitted into the tissues of the affected area of the body.

Each shockwave treatment works to increase the metabolic activity around the site of injury or dysfunction. This pulse stimulates the body’s natural healing process, in turn reducing pain and the expected time frame of healing for an injury.

Approximately 80% of all patients report a substantial improvement after the second treatment. If no improvement within the first four treatments, standard care resumes and further investigation/imaging may be required.

FAQ

How does Radial Shock Wave Therapy work?

The impulses from the applicator head send a ‘shock wave’ into the injured tissues to stimulate or re-initiate the healing process. This benefits through breaking down scar tissue and calcified tissue, enlarged tissue (hypertrophy) or slow healing injuries.

What can I expect?

It will feel like a pulsating jack hammer. You will experience a sensation of mild discomfort while the pulses help to break down scar tissue. the process is very tolerable and patients adjust to it as time progresses. Local redness will be produced and in some rare cases bruising. These will go away.

There may be some increased soreness in the next 24 hours after the treatment but this is only a healing reaction and should subside by the following day. The entire healing process can take up to 10 to 12 weeks but the result is rejuvenated tissues that are not easily injured as before.

What does the Research say?

Radial Shock Wave Therapy (RSWT) 1- Absolute Health Solutions Shockwave Therapy proved to work with acute pain, chronic pain, trigger points and in cases where treatment including surgery has previously failed.

The benefits of Shockwave Therapy can be found in numerous publications in the American Journal of Sports Medicine. While Shockwave Therapy is suitable to treat many conditions (see below), some research examples include the following success rates:

  • 90% improvement for Plantar Fasciitis (Journal of Orthopedic Research 2003)
  • 91% improvement for Calcific Rotator Cuff Tendonosis (Journal of the American Medical Association 2005)
  • 77% improvement for Tennis Elbow (Journal of Orthopaedics 2005)

How many treatment sessions do I need?

Common application of RSWT would be four treatment sessions, each one week apart. We also combine other treatment modalities such us mobilisations, Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilisation (IASTM), taping and rehabilitation exercises to give you the best outcome possible in the shortest time.
